MGM Geoservices
(Pty) Ltd

Established in 2017, MGM Geoservices is a geological company with a focus on geomodelling and GIS, i.e., visualization of spatial data (2D and 3D). It is a private company, incorporated in South Africa, with its office in Edenvale, Gauteng. The aim is to use our geomodelling skill set to supplement, aid, and/or support the work of the geology team in order to produce efficient, high quality results.

Geomodelling has a wide range of practical applications and we work across a variety of sectors including the minerals industry, research/teaching institutions, environmental geoscience, government, and planetary geoscience. The strength of geomodelling lies in the fundamental methodology of integrating spatially defined datasets (e.g., mapping, drilling, geochemical and geophysical surveys). This workflow, combined with competent geological knowledge, produces a strong visual tool for thorough analysis of geology-based problems or target areas. Visual expression of geological information also allows for quick understanding of geological results by non-geology professionals. Our geomodelling methodology therefore benefits higher-level structures in your company such as management and shareholders, and enables higher-confidence decision making with reduced risk.

Our Mission

We use our geomodelling skill set to supplement, aid, and/or support the work of the client in order to produce efficient, valuable, high quality results that you can rely on.

The variety of workloads our Director (Marcello Molezzi) was exposed to in mineral exploration highlighted efficiency problems in the structure of exploration programmes. It is from these inefficiencies that our mission has been frameworked.

It was observed that in this particular system geological data was disseminated from the field geologists to centralized database and evaluation departments situated at a Head Office, usually in another country. This process sacrificed geological context in order to centralize geological data acquisition and resource/reserve reporting. The hope being to spread the workload between specialities and gain higher confidence results.

Unfortunately, the loss of local geological expertise and the transfer of highly fragmented and disorganized databases to Head Office resulted in severely limited capability. The separation of workloads created instances for poor geological integration. As a result many evaluation models were constructed independently of geological constraints, and therefore geological interpretations were inferred from these ore grade models. Through our geomodelling style of work we are able to integrate a range of geological information and provide high quality, geologically restricted datasets for use by centralized departments, such as the Evaluation team for more accurate resource reporting.

Marcello Molezzi
(Director)

Marcello obtained his Master's degree (with distinction) in July 2017. The dissertation focused on modelling the central uplift region of the Vredefort impact crater (the largest and oldest confirmed meteorite impact crater on Earth) using drilling, mapping, and 2D reflection seismic data. Being the first of its kind his analysis provided value-added insight into not only giant impact crater formation, but also the tectonic history and structural architecture of the central Witwatersrand basin (for more information about his dissertation click here).

Prior to the Master’s degree Marcello spent nearly 5 years gaining extensive field-based experience in gold exploration programmes (mostly Greenfields) in west, central, and east Africa, as well as South Africa. This experience was invaluable to him because, apart from the incredible geological exposure, it highlighted the real-world benefits of competent teamwork and efficient operating systems in producing financially successful projects.
